Advent/Christmas Resources for Young and Old
–A Christmas Anthology  

This is a collection of services for Advent, Christmas Eve, and Children’s programs. Two programs in this collection are written by Mary Lu – What Is His Name? (A Children’s Christmas Pageant) and Come To the Manger (A Christmas Eve Candlelight communion Service.) The children’s program can use as many or as few children as you have in your church. It can be done by one reader or many, with actors pantomiming the scenes or pictures depicting them. Use your imagination and tell the story in a fresh and new way.

Miracle in the Bethlehem Inn – A Christmas Playmiracle1.jpg

This play has thirteen speaking characters and as many as are wanted in non-speaking parts. The story is about a two Jewish families who are descendants of King David – one owns the inn, the other is his brother from out of town who has come to pay his tax. A Gentile merchant and his family arrive at the in before the brother and his room is given to the rich Gentiles. Throughout the play the inn keeper is skeptical and only interested in money until the miracle occurs in his stable. He sings an original song, “I have Seen Him (music included).

Three for the Third Day – Three Easter Sunrise Servicesthree.jpg

Each of these three services have sample bulletins with them. They can be used for sunrise services or children’s Easter programs. Each takes about 30 minutes to perform. The first service, We Were There features an all female cast. It is the story of women who were waiting for the sunrise trip to the tomb. The second, A Night of Memories is a monologue or Mary the mother of Jesus, remembering the life of her son. (Parts of this service were used as the basis of one of the chapters in Before the Dawn: A Night of Memories.)The third, The Dream is the story of two young friends – a believer and non-believer. One appears in the other’s dream as an angel and leads him through the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Mary Lu’s contribution to this anthology of Holy Week services is Beyond the Shadows – a Service of Shadows and Holy Communion for Maundy Thursday. It contains the complete order of worship and text and makes use of candles which are extinguished after each section of the service until all lights are extinguished and the benediction is given in darkness.
